Moving to Babcock Ranch
Named after Edward Voss Babcock, a lumber baron and Mayor of Pittsburgh, Babcock Ranch occupies land in both Charlotte and Lee counties close to Fort Myers. The land was originally purchased in 1914 used as logging and agriculture. These industries were used to generate funds for the maintenance and operation of the Babcock Ranch Preserve. In the late 1990s, the Babcock Ranch sold the ranch to the state of Florida and Florida real estate development firm Kitson and Partners laid out a plan to sell over 74,000 acres to the state of Florida for preservation contingent on local and state approvals for the development of the property to be retained by the company. This would preserve the largest tract of continuous land in the state's history.
Approximately 90% of Babcock Ranch's total land has remained undeveloped however, once completed, Babcock Ranch is a master-planned community will feature 19,000 homes and 50,000 residents.
